FRANCO BIFO BERARDI AFTER THE FUTURE PDF

The future, Bifo argues, no longer exists—today, we have a futurism without the future. Futurism has always been about power, speed, violence, and acceleration. Advanced capitalism, however, has destroyed intelligence and creativity, the environment, the atmosphere, and even the soul. Its greedy, insatiable logic of more-more-more can only be counteracted from a post-futurist position, one that denies the future, putting its foot down and saying: no more!

Post-futurism means choosing a slowness of pleasure, to accommodate the fullness of time, to take joy in the decomposition of the self. To be a body again. We do not need more things, we need more time. Our ultimate existential problem, our most pressing survival concern is, how do we find a way to enjoy everything we already have? The body is forgotten, overexertion of the physical is ruthlessly promoted, and disembodiment as an ideal is offered by the network society. Our capitalism no longer needs to produce things; it makes concepts into things—it is semiocapital, the production of projects, figures, words, and ideas, the producer of illusions.

The more signs there are, the less meaning there is. The more information, the less understanding. This is a joyful Spinozist politics of immanence, one that earnestly asks: how can we create composite bodies that give us more power, through pleasure, rather than forcing together incongruent assemblages that generate long-term weakness through systemic sadness? In short, this is a politics that asks: how can we finally become human? June 16,

Autonomist ideas have been highly influential on recent anti-capitalist struggles, including Occupy. Zer0, , Mark Fisher discussed depression as one of the effects of the domination of culture by neo-liberal capital. Here, Berardi and Fisher explore the similarities and differences in their understanding of the current political situation. We also agree on the explanation for the end of the future: the arrival of neo-liberalism and post-Fordist capitalism at the end of the s.

The first thing to notice is that the compiled nature of the material does lead to some wobbles: around Bifo and his favoured authors were talking as if neoliberalism was beached, or lost at sea, or at any rate a "defeated enemy" - however they spoke too soon, as the boat managed to stay afloat a bit longer. As usual when theorists engage with electronic culture there is little technical understanding or direct engagement, with the result that they end up merely repeating the same old piffle that the tech-propagandists would like you to believe, simply putting a pessimistic spin on it instead of picking away at the material details and showing what a lot of waffle and wishful-thinking pervades the world of start-ups and the TED circuit and the consultancy vampires.
