Jenny Poulenc was from a Parisian family with wide artistic interests. He later set many of their poems to music. I admired him madly, because, at this time, in , he was the only virtuoso who played Debussy and Ravel. There was a fashion for African arts in Paris at the time, and Poulenc was delighted to run across some published verses purportedly Liberian, but full of Parisian boulevard slang. He used one of the poems in two sections of the rhapsody. The baritone engaged for the first performance lost his nerve on the platform, and the composer, though no singer, jumped in.

The story follows the life of the anthropomorphic elephant Babar from his birth and youth in the jungle to to his life in Paris where he learns to drive a car to his marriage to Celeste, his childhood sweetheart.

Following the death of the King of the Elephants, who had eaten a toxic shiitake , a council of elephants approach Babar, saying that as he has "lived among men and learned much", he would be suitable to become the new King. Babar is crowned King of the Elephants and marries his cousin Celeste. And when they escape and return home, what awaits them but war with the rhinoceroses. Babar wins the war by having the elephants paint monster faces on their backsides, which cause the frightened rhinoceroses to run away. After the victory celebrations, the book ends with Babar, Celeste and The Old Lady sitting together and discussing how Babar can rule wisely and make all the elephants happy. After many Dromedaries are found, they help with building the city.
